The Founder

Dr. Hussein A. Bulhan

The founder and President of Frantz Fanon University is Dr. Hussein A. Bulhan, a graduate of Harvard University, Boston University, and Wesleyan University. He is a renowned Fanon scholar whose book, Frantz Fanon and the Psychology of Oppression (1985), is still widely read since its publication thirty years ago.

He has published numerous academic works on Somali society and politics, including Politics of Cain—One Hundred Years of Crises in Somali Politics and Society (2008), Losing the Art of Somali Survival and Dignity (2013), and In-Between Three Civilizations (Vol. 1, 2013).

A former tenured professor at Boston University and its School of Medicine, Dr. Bulhan taught both undergraduate and graduate students and supervised over 40 doctoral dissertations. He also provided care for patients from diverse racial, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds.

In Somaliland, he played a pivotal role in national reconciliation. In 1995, he initiated the Peace Committee that mediated the 1994–1997 armed conflict. He co-founded and led the Academy for Peace and Development from 1997 to 2004—a respected think tank promoting peaceful dialogue and democratic governance.

Since 2004, Dr. Bulhan has served as Chief Clinician at Maandhaye Clinic, treating patients with various psychological and psychiatric conditions. From 2008 to 2010, he served as President of the University of Hargeisa, where he is credited with saving the institution from collapse.

Today, he continues to lead Frantz Fanon University while maintaining his clinical practice in mental health.

Dr. Bulhan received the Frantz Fanon Lifetime Achievement Award in 2021 from the Caribbean Philosophical Association. In 2020, the International Union of Psychological Science honored him with the prestigious Against the Odds Award, given once every three years to a psychologist for outstanding research and service under challenging conditions.
